Dead House- Genia Chef

Palazzo Bembo, 55. Biennale, Venice

The international art project “Personal Structures” in Palazzo Bembo, Rialto, has been present-ing works by contemporary artists who deal with the themes of space, time and existence on the occasion of the Venice Biennale for six years.
In his multimedia room installation “Dead House”, Genia Chef devotes himself to the historic event of the assassination of the Tsar’s family by the Bolsheviks in 1918, which was to have a decisive impact on Russian history. Inspired by documentary images, the artist stages the histor-ical site, the Ipatiev House in Ekaterinburg. The intelligent use of various media – 3D light boxes, 3D animation and miniature paintings – creates an ambivalent field of tension between domestic idyll and external violence, between inside and outside, between present and past, between political reality and historical transfiguration.
